Best Free Stock Screeners

Now, what exactly is a stock screener, and why do you need one? Well, stock screeners are extremely handy tools that allow you to screen the market for certain stocks which fit a given set of fundamental and technical criteria.

For example, say I want to look at all stocks with a P/E ratio of 20 and below, or if I’m only interested in stocks with a positive EPS, or maybe I’m interested in certain technical indicators, it would take all day if I were to look at each stock individually to see which ones fit my criteria.

However, with best stock screeners, we can filter out the stocks that do not meet our conditions, and what we’re left with is a basket of stocks we’re interested in. While this sounds like an extremely handy tool, many platforms which offer such services require an upfront payment.

This deters many people from even attempting to find such tools to improve their investing experience, but don’t worry anymore! In this list, you’ll find a useful list of best stock screeners which can be accessed free of charge.

Investing.com

Investing.com is a popular tool used to check ticker prices, and also to read up on financial news. However, what many people overlook is its handy and one of the best stock screener which is offered for completely free of charge! Simply go under the ‘Markets’ tab and look under ‘Stocks’ to locate the stock screener.

This basic stock screener allows you to filter stocks based on a given set of criteria – multiple fundamental and technical metrics are available, depending on your investing strategy.

It is especially noteworthy that you’re able to screen stocks across different markets worldwide. There’s a great variety of countries and exchanges to choose from, and the tool performs its functions adequately across all of them. You are also able to filter by equity type, sector, and industry.

As shown from the top picture, I’m able to screen for all stocks listed in U.S. markets that have a P/E (TTM) from 11 to 20, and with market capitalization from 3.46B to 2.86T.

Similarly, I’m able to do the same for stocks listed in the Singapore market (see the second picture), where I have screened for stocks from 0.01 to 10 P/E (TTM), and 1B to 100B for market capitalization.

Of course, you can set your criteria and make use of the tool provided by Investing.com to filter your results. This is simply an example of how easy it is to use this platform to screen for stocks easily across international markets.

In addition, you’re able to save your screens and revisit them so you do not have to apply the same filters every time you use the platform!

Another great feature that comes with this platform is the ability to view the ‘Fundamental’, ‘Technical’, ‘Performance’ and ‘Candlestick Patterns’ tabs, which provide useful information about the stocks you are screening.

The example above shows the performance of the stocks that fit my screening criteria over the years. This gives me a better idea of how these companies (which I’m interested in) have been doing in terms of stock price.

One thing to note is that Investing.com offers an advanced screener, which gives you access to more functions, and more variety of filters to apply on the given stocks. However, this function requires a paid subscription, and the original tool which is provided free of charge is more than adequate for my tastes.

If you’re choosing to go for paid subscription anyhow, then I would surely recommend you to check this paid stock screener called ‘Stock Over’. Feel free to read my Stock Rover’s review here.

Finviz

If you’re looking for a free stock screener, Finviz can also do the job reasonably well. The platform is commonly used for its stock screener, along with other useful information, like target prices and financial articles.

The website itself boasts a decently wide range of criteria – fundamental and technical, which you can use to filter stocks. You also don’t need to add on each filter manually, as the interface allows you to set multiple criteria at once very quickly.

Here is an example of me finding all stocks which are down 15% on the current trading day.

Under the box containing ‘My Presets’, you’re also able to save your screens so you can reuse them in the future. Finviz makes it to this list of best stock screeners because it is indeed, a pretty useful and free tool you can use to find stocks that fit your criteria.

However, the drawback would be that you’ll mostly be screening for stocks in American markets, whereas Investing.com boasts a huge variety of regions you can choose from. In addition, the interface may not be very user-friendly to some as the words and buttons are very small.

Yahoo Finance

Most of us have heard about Yahoo Finance. For most people, it’s the go-to site when looking for ticker prices, viewing financial data, and reading financial articles. However, they also provide one of the best stock screener which can be used for free!

Unlike many stock screeners, Yahoo Finance Stock Screener allows you to choose the type of screener you wish to use before you set your criteria.

You may use an equity screener if you’re interested in stocks, or other screeners like an ETF screener and/or mutual fund screener if you’re interested in other financial instruments. Such functions are not covered by platforms like Finviz.

Once you’ve selected your preferred screener, you’re able to filter by region, market cap, sector, and industry (see the first picture), but that’s not all!

When you click ‘Add another filter’, you’re directed to a pop-up window that boasts a good number of metrics you can choose from to add to your filter criteria (see the second picture).

Yahoo Finance is one of the few best stock screeners providing accurate stock screening across international markets.

Something unique about Yahoo Finance is that your screening results can be viewed through a heat map. Though this isn’t the default viewing setting, it is a nice way to know how each stock is doing at a single glance.

You’re also able to save your screens for all sorts of stocks, mutual funds, and more financial instruments. So that you can conveniently reuse them if you wish. All in all, Yahoo Finance is a pretty decent stock screener offering its services across international markets, but the main drawback would be a potentially smaller selection of filter criteria compared to other screeners.

TradingView

TradingView is another impressive platform that provides free stock screening functions. The platform itself is known for providing very detailed and accurate price charts in real-time, but its stock screener is pretty handy too!

Your criteria can be set by hitting ‘Filters’ (see the first picture) which brings up this pop-up window where you can select a huge variety of financial and technical metrics (see the second picture).

You can also filter by sector and industry. Clicking on the little U.S. circular flag icon (in the first picture) also brings you to this ‘Markets’ page which allows you to filter stocks based on region. While the interface may be slightly challenging to navigate, the features provided are second-to-none.

It’s good to note that TradingView provides many more fundamental and technical metrics than most stock screeners.

By clicking on the tab next to ‘Filters’, you’re able to save your screen so you can reuse it in the future. As a whole, TradingView provides an excellent screener which boasts many useful functions.

It has an extremely wide range of metrics to choose from when choosing your filter criteria. A drawback would be that the interface may not be too user-friendly for beginners, but with practice, this one’s worth a look.

SGX

If you’re into stocks listed on SGX, the SGX website provides a free user-friendly and pretty best stock screener which does a decent job of finding stocks that fit a certain set of criteria.

As seen from the first picture, you’re able to set your criteria and select the sector you’re interested in. After doing so, a list of stocks that fit your criteria will be generated (see the second picture). This is a great tool if you want to get the job done quickly and are only interested in a handful of metrics.

The interface is extremely easy-to-navigate and the filters and data are presented clearly. However, the market is limited to the Singaporean market, and there isn’t a very big variety of metrics to choose from when selecting your filter criteria.

Conclusion

Now that you’re an expert in stock screeners, it’s good to know how such tools can be used to enrich your investing experience. Many people who are interested in stock fundamentals filter stocks by EPS, P/E, and market capitalization.

There are other key financial ratios like ROE, D/E, and P/S which are also extremely important. If you’re more interested in a stock’s technical indicators, it’s good to look up metrics like RSI, moving averages, and stochastics.

Once you’re well-versed in these fundamental and/or technical metrics, you’ll be able to set up meaningful screening criteria to find a basket of stocks that you’re interested in.
