Glassdoor, a website where current and former employees anonymously review companies, just announced the Top 10 best places to work in Singapore for 2020.

Unfortunately, no local firms made the cut. All the top Singapore employers of 2020 are international firms. 8 of the leading 10 are headquartered in the US, one in the Netherlands and one in HK.

“This year’s winners stand out for promoting transparency with employees, offering career growth opportunities and providing work driven by impact and purpose”

Christian Sutherland-Wong, Glassdoor president

The top 10 shortlists are based on anonymous feedback from employees who submitted reviews on their employer to Glassdoor in 2019.

Those reviews included feedback on a range of aspects including career opportunities, compensation, senior management, and culture & values.

No. 10: HP Inc – rating of 4.2

HP is a brand that has been around for many decades and one synonymous with printers and computers that are lying in your offices at the moment. The company, however, itself was only formed towards the end of 2015, when the Hewlett-Packard Company was split into Hewlett Packard Enterprise and HP Inc.

The new and more nimble HP Inc, has a motto for hiring: “HP is hiring, and the only criteria are talent”.

While one, especially the younger generation, does not usually associate HP Inc with fun and cool products, the company is looking to change that mindset.

The company’s SGD$100m headquarters located in the Telok Blangah district of Singapore is home to HP’s first Smart Manufacturing Applications and Research Centre in the world.

The new HP Inc offices feature open spaces for employees to work as well as a large rest and cafe area to chill out or have lunch.

No. 9: J.P. Morgan – rating of 4.2

A global banking behemoth, most will be familiar with J.P. Morgan as one of, if not the largest investment bank in the world.

The company recently made the “gossip headlines” in Singapore when a video of one of its employee verbally abusing a security officer went viral over the internet.

Senior country officer of JP Morgan’s Singapore office, Mr Edmund Lee, subsequently send an internal memo to his staff:

“Our people, servies and commitment to integrity have made JP Morgan one of the most respected financial institutions in the world. We all have a shared responsibility for preserving and building on this strong reputation”.

No. 8: Hubspot – rating of 4.2

Hubspot might be one of those companies on this list that you are not aware of what the company actually does. The company is a developer and marketer of software products for inbound marketing and sales.

Its products and services aim to provide tools for social media marketing, content management, web analytics and search engine optimization.

The company opened its office in Singapore in 2016 at Mapletree Anson in Singapore’s Central Business District, where the company’s APAC headquarters is currently located.

Stepped into its office and one will be wowed by its offices that have been styled after shipping containers.

Add to that a modern-age “pantry” with a candy bar and beer tap to satiate anyone’s cravings for sweets & alcohol and you have a winning combo for employee satisfaction.

No wonder they rank so high on employees’ satisfaction list!

No. 7: AIA – rating of 4.2

AIA Singapore has been consistently listed as one of the most desired employers in Singapore’s 100 Leading Graduate Employers ranking. The company has various programmes in place that help motivate its staff.

The company also provides rewards and incentive trips to celebrate employees’ achievements.

In late 2018, the company launched a tongue-in-cheek video series focusing on health and productivity in the workplace.

The three videos demonstrate the contrast between a healthy and unhealthy workplace and how it affects employee productivity, teamwork and individual mental and physical well-being.

Well, seeing that the company is in the top 10 list of the best companies to work for, it does seem like it is practising what it preaches.

No. 6: Visa Inc – rating of 4.2

A company that I personally admire (in terms of its business model and of course share price performance), Visa is a well-known international firm that most Millenials will have its product snuggly tug in your wallet.

The company has its own Top 10 reasons why Visa is the company you want to be in.

According to payscale, some of the perks for working in Visa include:

  1. Flexible work timing
  2. Paid Sick Leave
  3. Casual Dress Atmosphere
  4. Free Drinks/Coke/juice
  5. Gym/Health club/fitness membership
  6. Life Insurance
  7. Education/Training/ Tuition/ Certification Reimbursement

No. 5: Microsoft – rating of 4.3

The second-largest company in the work by market capitalization, Microsoft, the brainchild of Bill Gates, sits at No. 5 in the list.

The company is well-known for placing a strong value on its employees. The culture has shifted from super individual competitor to making others successful with a focus on teamwork. This greatly reduces the stress level at work, according to employees.

A cool office doesn’t hurt, where everything is paperless and connected wirelessly, with cool ground-breaking inventions.

Not only do the staff get to try their hand at newest products before they hit the shelves, they are also entitled to discounts on various Microsoft product.

What is not to like about this company!

No. 4: Amazon – rating of 4.3

Amazing Amazon sits at No. 4 in the list. The company also ranked as the No. 1 company to work for in LinkedIn’s list of the top companies in Japan this year.

In the US, the company was also ranked as the best place to work in 2018, according to LinkedIn, outshining peers like Google and Facebook.

If you have got a strong passion for invention, then Amazon is likely the right place for you. It’s 3 guiding principles are 1) customer obsession, 2) passion for invention and 3) long-term thinking.

Amazon’s infamous frugality for basic desks and vending machines means you will probably not witness the likes of cafes and rock climbing walls often associated with Google offices.

No. 3: Shell – rating of 4.3

The only oil company to make the cut, Shell whose HQ is in the Netherlands, sits in the Top 3 in this list. The company was

If you are an engineering or chemical engineering graduate, chances are, Shell is a company you are very familiar with.

The company has progressive policies in place such as Flexi-working scheme that increases the appeal of working with the company. Work-life balance is probably also a key benefit of working in Shell.

Unlike its tech counterparts, the Shell office, however, is probably not one where you can expect to find lavish cafes and sleeping pods. The company likely scores high on its “people-oriented” culture.

No. 2: Facebook – rating of 4.4

Facebook swanky office Marina One is likely a dream workplace for many.

Littered with gadgets across its sprawling 260,000 sqft of floor space area (4 floors), one can find a giant Instagram wall, a vending machine that dispenses electronic products and of course the iconic Facebook walls in every office.

Did I also mention that their meeting rooms have names such as “Why Liddat”, “You Tiao & Soya Bean”? Talk about instilling creativity.

Ultimately, the appeal of working in a company like Facebook is not just about a swanky-looking office but also the opportunity for employees to have career progression in an inclusive and collaborative environment.

No. 1: Google – rating of 4.5

At the top of our list is Google. Another company that needs no introduction, given that most of us Singaporeans use it’s search function on a daily basis.

Over at Google, employees are given exposure to large-scale projects as well as the opportunity to learn from each other in the Googler 2 Googler classes.

The search engine giant is also highly rated for its creative and fun workspaces.
