Getting started on Investing
This post is slightly different from my usual content.
We are coming to the end of 2020 and I will like to take this opportunity to thank all my readers for their kind support that they have given New Academy of Finance over the past 1 year since its launch, with the site readership a couple of months back breaching the half a million mark.
New Academy of Finance was set up to provide better financial information to the masses, be it on investing or personal finance matters.
I do acknowledge that at times, my content can be a wee bit technical which might raise the question of “What exactly are you talking about?”
However, I do believe that to add more value, the content should not be superficial, or a run-of-the-mill material that can be easily sourced from the internet.
Therefore, I try my best to be as detailed as possible and that could unwittingly result in a “Mambo-Jambo” of content that looks foreign to the masses and only better understood by those who are more familiar with the topic in question.
I will still like to be “true” to my writing style and try to provide as much value-added content to my readers in the coming year.
Some of my readers have been asking if I can provide them with a simplified Getting Started on Investing Guide to get them started on their investing journey since I “look” to be knowledgeable in this arena. I will like to be upfront and put a DISCLAIMER: I am not a licensed financial advisor and while I stem from the investment industry (I am an ex-analyst), all the content and recommendation provided are purely for sharing and discussion purposes and not an inducement to buy or sell any of the proposed ideas.
For those looking to get some stock ideas inspiration, you can check out the following blog posts below which are some of my more popular ones:

I try to provide more investing ideas beyond our local shore as the Singapore market is just too small. While we seem to have a resurgent interest of late, I do have concerns over the sustainability of the market rally, which seems to be based on the assumption that a vaccine will be available soon for the masses.
We see beaten-down aviation-related stocks like SIA rallying to a 52-week high (while the company continues to seek funding from stakeholders to fund its operations), SATS making a huge rebound, coming close to hitting a level last seen before the onset of COVID-19.
Does all of these make sense? These companies’ core operations are likely to remain in the doldrums in 2021 (even with the introduction of a vaccine, the travel industry is not likely to recover to prior levels over the next 2-3 years, in my humble opinion) and yet their share prices seem to indicate that their operations are ready to scale new heights in the foreseeable future?
Well, the market is ALWAYS right until they are proven wrong.
I digress but I believe it makes sense to diversify one’s investing portfolio beyond our local shores into higher quality and innovative companies that possess a huge runway of growth, many of which can leverage on long-term structural growth trends.
However, for most new investors in the early innings of their investment journey, being able to identify these stocks is not an easy task. It takes time and effort. They are probably better off taking a more passive approach first to get the hang of investing before venturing into “individual stocks selections”.
NAOF Mini Investing Series (Free)
Therefore, I have developed an investing quick start video guide which I believe will help get a newbie started on his/her investing journey. Even for seasoned investors, I provide some nuggets of information on more advanced strategies such as the deployment of options that can help you boost your “passive” income potential.
All this will be covered in a quick but comprehensive 40-mins video tutorial that will be segmented into these 5 key areas:
- Chapter 1: Taking your first step into the Investing World
- Chapter 2: Figuring out how much you need to retire well
- Chapter 3: Passive Investing Solutions that a new investor can take
- Chapter 4: Active Investing Solutions in income-generating assets
- Chapter 5: Free Resources + 2 advance strategies to boost your monthly income
The video tutorials will be accompanied by additional reading content to further enhance your understanding of the topics in question as well as keep you updated on the latest developments (if any).
For example, I have provided a comprehensive Guide to Brokerages in Singapore which will give you a quick idea as to which brokerage house/s might be suitable for you to sign up with and purchase your local or foreign stocks. This information will be updated periodically.
Also, in chapter 5, I will be providing you some free resource guides where you can use those sites/apps to enhance your investing knowledge. I will show you how to get access to Bloomberg articles (normally priced at $400++/year) FREE.
All the videos and additional reading materials will be provided to you, again FOC which you can access through the Teachable platform by clicking on the link below and inputting the coupon code: NAOFMINI
I hope that you have fun going through the beginner videos.
NAOF Investing Series
Separately, for those who wish to go one step further, I will provide a more in-depth investing video course (about 4-5 hours) which will cover the following key topics:

This is something that I have already pre-launched to my >200 existing students who are interested in getting the RIGHT knowledge to use options as part of their trading/investing arsenal. This will be launched in 2021 to the public, so do look out for it.
As highlighted, this NAOF Investing Series will also be done in a video format, approx. 4-5 hours in total duration (course content is broken down into 7 bite-size videos for easy consumption). This will be helmed again on the Teachable platform.
