Hi, I'm Royston!
Dear Readers,
I have got no sob-stories to entertain ya. I am just a regular joe, happily married, with two “highly energetic” young boys that can never seem to settle down! Life is peaceful, or if you wish to put it with a tad of negative connotation to it, BORING. Some say boring is good!
But that scenario changed when I decided to “explore the road less traveled”. In 2019, I decided to leave my job as an equity analyst, a role which I remained passionate about, to start a personal finance site to help myself and others get out of the rat race.
After procrastinating for years, I decided to finally take that leap of faith. After all, I do have a stable job in the finance industry “advising” intelligent folks on the nuances of the stock market and which might be the next “ten-bagger” stock that you need to get your hands on right now.
The decision to leave this industry amid considerations of raising two young kids has not been an easy one but at a “ripe old age of 36”, I felt this is now or never and I do not wish to look back in 10 years time and lament “What if….”
Alas, New Academy of Finance was born!
New Academy of Finance is a personalized financial site that delves deep into savings, passive income, investments, retirement planning and more, so we can all achieve financial independence sooner, rather than later. In time to come, we will also provide a wide range of financial resources/courses with the sole aim of taking control of our finances.
I really enjoy reading finance and life articles/blogs and I also enjoy reading the comments and discussions that other people have. I hope to use this blog to educate and inform others and myself about finance, frugality, saving and the likes.
Of particular interest to me is the topic of INVESTING. This is an area that I am deeply passionate about and I hope to help as many people as possible, not just kickstart their investing journey, but to be part of their journey where the end goal is to achieve the coveted financial freedom.
2022 UPDATE
Since leaving my full-time job back in 2019, I have embarked on a number of initiatives beyond starting New Academy of Finance. I am currently an option coach to almost 800 students who are keen to learn and develop a new trading skillset to help them get an edge over the competition.
I am also an ongoing SGX Trainer and Speaker. Recently, I contributed my option knowledge expertise, through an excerpt in this top selling book, The Systematic Trader V2.0. This is the community gathered at the book launch event:
2022 was also the year that I launched the New Academy of Finance Flagship Investing Course, Stock Alpha Blueprint, an intuitive e-course that seeks to address the key problems that retail investors face all the time when they embark on their stock investing journey.
For those who are interested to take a more hands-on approach to your investing portfolio, this is going to be the course just for you.
Closing statement: Live ain’t gonna be forever. That one statement drives the motivation to create this website to document my financial journey for my kids to read and learn from (when they are old enough). Of course, all other internet readers, you are most welcome here! There will be no falsehoods written here. Please read and learn what you can, but do your own due-diligence.
Personal Philosophy
Never fail because of a lack of effort as effort requires no skills
Take calculated risks in life. It is too short not to live it to the fullest
Teach yourself and your kids the importance of Personal Finance. It is an under-rated skill set never emphasized in schools but often the one which helps you achieve financial success
Never stop learning
Always pay and invest in yourself first. To quote Benjamin Franklin, “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest“.
